PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE MAKING YOUR WAY TO THE GARDEN CENTRE!!

We are as excited as you are for the

start of gardening season in the Peterborough Region!

*Given the current Stay at Home Order, please review the following information prior to your visit to help keep you and our staff healthy and safe.

Provincial Indoor Capacity Limits

The limits currently in place are set by the Province at 25% and apply to both our greenhouse and our Garden Center.

The Province also specifies that only 2 members from the same household may visit our business at the same time:

While we prefer our customers to come alone, we understand that this is sometimes not possible. As per Public Health guidelines, 2 Household Members means:

  • One adult and one child from the same household or

  • One adult and one teen from the same household or

  • Two adults from the same household.

  • One person from the household with another person who lives alone.

Children and Seniors:

We strongly discourage you from bringing your children to our greenhouse as this exposes them to unnecessary contact with other customers and our staff. Regarding your senior friends or relatives, please understand that there is a lot of standing and walking, often in hot, greenhouse temperatures, with no access to seating. While you cannot access our washroom, we are striving to provide a portable outdoor Porta-Potty for our customers for the months of May and June (only).

Expect Line-ups:

While we understand the enjoyment of browsing through the greenhouse, this year, please plan ahead. If everyone browses less, our line-ups will move more quickly.  Please dress for the weather since line-ups will sometimes be outside.

Come Prepared, Follow Directions:

We ask that you come prepared with a list, know what you want, and limit your time at our business. This will help give equitable access to everyone and keep you and our staff as safe as possible. You will find the layout of the greenhouse a bit different this year, with plants laid out alphabetically to help you find what you need more quickly. Please follow the yellow arrows on the floor as you move through the greenhouse towards our check-out area.

Carts, Masks and Hand Sanitizer

Every customer will be provided with a sanitized shopping cart before entering the greenhouse. These are used to help us regulate our Provincially-imposed capacity limits and to help you keep yourself socially distanced from your fellow customers and our staff.

All staff will be wearing masks and all customers will be required to wear a properly fitted mask and to observe social distancing guidelines while on our premises.

All visitors will be asked to use the hand sanitizer provided at our greenhouse entryway.

Food, Drink, Pets:

There is no food or drink permitted inside the greenhouse or Garden Center.

There are no pets permitted other than documented service dogs.

Working together in abiding by Provincial rules and regulations, we strive to continue to serve you well, as is the Johnston tradition, and we look forward to seeing you this season!

LET’S HOPE WE ARE BACK TO JUST PLAIN OLD “NORMAL” NEXT SEASON, IN THE MEANTIME PLEASE BEAR WITH US!

COVID-19PROTOCOLS:

You must wear a mask and keep 2 meters or more distance from staff and other customers while visiting our Garden Center.  At this time, our Rest Room is not available to the public.

Regarding our day-to-day business operations during this pandemic, information changes frequently and we do our best to keep you informed of any changes.  However, we may miss something at this busy time of year for our industry and we appreciate your patience and understanding.

When we are able to open up the greenhouse, customers will be required to line up outside at the front double doors so please keep in mind the daily weather and dress appropriately. No food or drink is allowed in the greenhouse.

WATERING

Your new trees, shrubs, perennials, hanging baskets and containers will need your attention since our summers are consistently so dry and hot.  Please only water the soil around your plants, never water the leaves.  If you find a plant needs immediate watering during a hot day, it is a good idea to check the temperature of the water you are using with your hand first, as the hose or container may be very hot and therefore will have heated the water inside.  This is not good for your plant or its roots!  During springtime, also check the temperature of the water you are using.  Coming from an outdoor hose or a container left outside, the water will be ice cold.  This temperature will shock them!  Rather, fill up a few watering cans and let the sun warm up the water.

FERTILIZING

Hanging baskets and annuals also need to be fertilized throughout the summer, once every ten days with a 20-20-20 or 15-30-15 product Please do not fertilize when the soil in your containers is dry.  Water them as above to revive the soil and then for best results, feed them in the morning when temperatures are cooler.

COOLER SPRING TEMPERATURES:

Buying your annuals before the first week of June and depending on daily and nightly temperature forecasts, you may need to cover them since it is not unusual to still have frost warnings.  Tender plants like potato vine, Coleus and Begonias are just a few that will not like a cold night. Keeping plants in a dark garage for extended periods of time, while protecting them from colder temperature, will cause these plants to stretch, trying to find some light. Please put them outside during the day to get as much sunlight as possible while we wait for air and ground temperatures to become consistently warmer.
